Creative Publishing Strategy Session
 
The purpose of the publishing strategy session is two-fold: 1) place your book and its subsidiary rights in the appropriate context for your creative and professional goals; 2) identify the specific action steps, timeline, budget considerations, delegation and accountability strategy required to achieve your goals. 

Whether you are an author with a commercial publisher or you are a self publisher, the overview provides you with a timeline and the supply chain map from your book’s concept all the way through to the cash that you are paid from the sales of the book and/or subsidiary right licenses.

Based on the questionnaire you complete prior to our meeting, I design your session to emphasize the key points that are specific to your goals. In general, each two-hour strategy session covers the following six areas.
 

I.                   Editorial

 

*       Definition of your compelling message

*       Research strategies

*       Writing strategies

*       How to use the reviewer and critique process in order to seed early sales

 

II.                Marketing

 

*       Definition of the brand you are creating for your book

o        Title and subtitle

o        Primary publishing category

*       Definition of your target market and how to seed the market via social media tools and techniques

*       How to plan the four stages of your marketing campaign

 

III.             Production

 

*       The three levels of manuscript editing

*       Page layout and design

*       Art and illustrations

*       Permissions and indexing

*       Paper, printing, and binding

*       Print-on-demand (POD) options

*       The pros/cons of subsidy publishers versus your own resource team

 

 

IV.              Sales

 

*       How to choose the optimal publication date

*       How to estimate your first-year sales

*       How to determine the appropriate distribution channels

*       How to fulfill orders and customer service

 

 

V.                 Your Action Plan

 

*       Based on this strategy session, we prioritize the steps required and a timeline for them.
